Here is a D.C. jewel: Don’t miss the opportunity for intimate and immediate connection with stage and players that this small venue provides. Laurel Mill Playhouse is fine regional theater, where regional means talent from across the DC metro area: actors and directors who flock to auditions and who take roles because they love theater and are willing to sacrifice income. From Shakespeare to Sondheim and beyond, this tiny stage seems always to yield something miraculous. Bravo! (Melissa Holland, Laurel)
I was looking forward to this play but most likely will never return to the Laurel Mill Playhouse because THE STAFF IS INCOMPETENT AND THEY ARE ALSO LIARS. For Colored Girls was obviously not for this ‘colored girl’ or her man. Its situations like this that make colored girls consider suicide because the rainbow is never enough. I rate this experience zero stars but had to give it 1 to publish.
Act 3, in walks two ladies behind us (later than us) who said they had a relative in the show and they had someone save seats for them. The box office attendant went in and found that yes someone was holding two seats for them. Could these possibly have been our two paid for seats? And when she returned, she thrust $40 in my hand, pretended as if we disappeared, and as we were leaving, she allowed the later ladies into the theatre.
We saw Man of La Mancha here. The house is small and cozy, but I was impressed with how much set/scenery they were able to get on their seemingly small stage, including a large cast! The show was very well done. There isn't a ton of nearby parking, however.
Act 2, we arrived at the theatre about 2:11pm only to be told that no, our seats were not guaranteed, but had been given away (sold!) at 2pm. We were also told that no seats that were available at show time were saved, but were sold as well (which obviously as you will see later, was a lie). We demanded to see the director who we were told was in charge, but of course he, at the time was directing the show. We asked to see the person who sold us the tickets, but no one knew who he was (Michael?). So of course we demanded a refund only to be told that the person at the box office had nothing to do with the money? She collected it, so how does she all of a sudden not have anything to do with the money?
Every show I have seen here has been amazing. They are able to accomplish so much with so little. I have always enjoyed smaller theatres. They provide a more intimate feeling with the show. I always try and see whatever new show they are putting together. I am looking forward to "Happy Hollandaise" on December 2nd.
Act 1, on Sunday, 19 October, 2014, around noon, we purchased two tickets to attend the 2pm (and final) show of For Colored Girls at the Laurel Mill Playhouse. During the conversation, we were told that to guarantee our seats we would need to pay with a credit card. So we paid with a credit card and mistakenly assumed that “our” tickets/seats were guaranteed.
Cute little theatre with old but comfortable seating. Small parking lot yards from the theatre make parking easy.
